Are you a person with the desire to connect, help, or make a difference in everyday interactions? The retail industry might be a perfect fit. Working in the retail industry is all about enhancing customer experience. As a retail associate, you’re the intermediary between the customer and the brand you represent. With that being said, here are three things you can do to excel in your retail career.

Tips to Help You Excel in Your Retail Career

Tip #1: Think on Your Feet

We know—retail associates work on their feet all day. But you also need to think on your feet. The ability to adapt to challenging or variable situations is imperative in retail. Sometimes customers may get upset if, for example, you don’t have a clothing item in their size. How do you deal with it? Empathize with them and if your retail store offers free delivery, offer to have the item ordered and delivered to their home address. That way, you make the sale and the customer gets exactly what they are looking for. Win-win!

Tip #2: Be Honest

In any situation - especially when dealing with customers - honesty is the best policy. If you don’t know a specific product feature, it’s best to get clarification from your manager or a fellow colleague. Pulling in a teammate to help shows that you’re an honest person. It may even be a learning experience for your colleague - maybe both of you will learn something new.

Tip #3: Be Confident

Customers may often come to you for advice or ask you for your opinion. Remember that you’re the expert on what you sell, so be confident with your recommendations. This will help you to make a sale and improve your communication and relationship building skills. This advice extends to your resume! What are Workers Saying About the Retail Industry

More than 3,000 workers were surveyed in a poll run by Deputy. The results showed that 86% of retail workers feel their work contributes to their organization's success. This demonstrates that workers take pride in their job and will do whatever they can to not only grow themselves but the company as well. It is important not only to think about how you can help the business in your role but also how you can harness new skills to excel into your next role! The retail industry is constantly evolving, which means there are new opportunities for workers looking to grow their skills and develop as leaders in the field. One of the hallmarks of a post-pandemic world is that the workforce is becoming more digitized.

For example, you can manage payroll and labour can be greatly improved with the use of digital technologies. Store managers can gain insight into productivity and recommend improvements.
